The American Red Cross is offering a first aid kit for purchase that can be customized for almost any situation and can be kept in your car, boat, or RV. The Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross is now accepting donations of used books, videos, DVDs, CDs, LPs, cassette tapes, maps, sheet music, games, and puzzles for its 2010 Book Fair. The community is invited to drop off all donations at the Red Cross office, 411 E. 7th St., between 8:30am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. Proceeds from the Book Fair will help the chapter provide humanitarian services in the areas of disaster relief and emergency service. Contact the Red Cross at 332-7292 in Monroe County or 829-9233 in Owen County for more infomation, or stop by our chapter at 411 E. 7th St.
Shalom Community Center has an urgent need for sleeping bags to distribute to unsheltered homeless men and women. Community members are encouraged to bring new or gently used cold weather sleeping bags to the Center's facilities at 219 E. Fourth Street in Bloomington. For more information call 812-334-5734.

It covers employment, transportation, telecommunications and public accommodations. Amy Brier's "Too Much of a Good Thing" features limestone carvings and paper rubbings.  Reception music by Peter Kienle and Paul Kirk. Amy Brier's artwork, carved directly in stone, combines traditional carving techniques with contemporary art ideas such as public interaction and appropriation. While her main means of production is carving, she does not limit her efforts to a single "signature" medium. Instead, she moves between various media such as glass, stone, paper, metal, and sand.

September 4th

Come to the Lawrence County Car show! On Sept. 4th, bikes will start signing in at 9am and prices will be $20 a bike and $25 a bike with 2 people. T-shirts are $10! The car show will be starting at 1pm but come out for as long as you want. There will be concessions and games for all. There will be 2 bands playing and starting around 1pm also. Any and all classic cars are welcome, as well as donations. This is being held at Heltonville Baseball fields, located off of Diamond Road in Heltonville,IN. All proceeds are benefitting the Lawrence County Firefighters Association (LCFA). This year, the LCFA is giving all proceeds to Pleasant Run Vol. Fire Dept. to purchase new gear and tools as well as offset some costs for the maintenance of the station and trucks. Based on television's popular Iron Chef, the event will feature three local chefs who will have one hour to cook a winning dish from a pantry of ingredients. A "local mystery ingredient" will be revealed right before the competition begins and Chefs will be required to incorporate this item in their dish.

 

September 6th

The 19th annual Smithville Labor Day Celebration will be on Monday, September 6th from 10am to 4pm. It will be held at the community park in Smithville, Indiana on Strain Ridge Rd. Antique cars, trucks, and motorcycles will be on display from car clubs in the surrounding area. Live music will be performed thoughout the day on the park's outdoor stage. The Smithville museum and Doc Mitchell building will also be open. A variety of food will be served from 11am to 2:30pm at the shelter house. There will be a free inflatable area for kids. This event is co-sponsored by the Smithville Area Association and the Cruisin' Classics of Bloomington Car Club with help from the Smithville Christian Church, the Clear Creek Township Trustee, the Smithville Samaritans 4-H club, and SHS alumni, friends and neighbors. This is the major fundraising event for the Association who uses the funds throughout the year on community projects. For more information call the Association number at 824-8859.

September 10th and 11th

All former 4-H members are invited to attend and participate in the first 4-H Alumni reception the weekend of Friday, September 10th and Saturday, September 11th. On September 10th, a "meet and greet" will be held at Indiana University, while on September 11th, a family atmoshpere reception will be held at the Draper-Earles Auditorium of the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $15 for Friday, $12.50 for adults and $6 for kids six years and younger for the Saturday event. Tickets may be purchased at the Monroe County Extension Office, located at 3400 S Walnut Street in Bloomington, and will be available until September 1st. Middle Way House will be hosting a Domestic Violence Training session on Saturday, September 11th and Saturday, September 25th from 9am to 5pm with an hour lunch break. You will only need to attend one of the training dates. Our domestic violence training is required for anyone interested in volunteering with Middle Way House programs. Join us at 219 E 4th St at the First United Methodist Church across from the downtown post office in Bloomington.

Mark your calendars! Habitat for Humanity is holding an informational meeting on Saturday, Sept 11th at 10am at the Habitat for Humanity Office on Kirkwood Ave. Qualified families must have a need for housing, the ability to pay for housing, and a willingness to partner with Habitat.

 

September 21

The Bloomington Independent Retaurant Association (BIRA) is hosting its first Golf Outing on Tuesday, September 21st at Eagle Point Golf Resort. A portion of the proceeds will go to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard to help stock their pantry for people in need. This outing will be like no other, with BIRA members offering their food throughout the course. It is a Team Scramble format, with the cost at $300 per 4-person team. The event will begin at 1pm with a shotgun start. There will be a hole-in-one contest with $5,000 going to any one lucky enough to ace that hole. There will be many other prizes available. Please have your team signed in no later than 12:30pm.

 

Sept 25th

We would like to invite you to participate in our annual Stinesville Stone Quarry Festival Parade. This years parade will be Saturday, September 25th in Stinesville. The line up will start at 12 noon and the parade will begin at 2pm. If you choose to participate, please fill out a registration form and return it by fax or mail it.

 

 October 2010

 

The MCHA announces its first annual spokesdog contest for the 2010 Walk for the Animals. The Walk, which takes place on the first Sunday of October every year, is one of the MCHA's largest community fundraisers to support the mission of the MCHA. New this year, the MCHA is searching for a canine from our community to serve as the celebrity spokesdog for the walk and the cause of the animal welfare who will appear in promotional materials, special appearances and at the Walk for the Animals on October 3rd, 2010 at Karst Farm Park. The winning dog should be spayed or neutered, friendly toward people and other animals, well-mannered, and able to attend media events and the event itself. To enter, participants need to visit www.monroehumane.org to fill out an entry form with a 250 word or less essay about why your pooch should be our spokesdog along with sending us a picture of your best friend. Entry fee is $10 per dog. Deadline to enter is June 15th.

 

October 2nd

The Bloomington Mulitcultural Expo will take place on Saturday, October 2nd from 11am to 4pm at Bryan Park. The expo will celebrate the diverse populations living in Bloomington and will feature the Soul Food Festival, Festival Latino, Moon Festival, and the International Festival. Don't miss this wonderful event and join the myriad of cultural organizations, performers, and musicians representing our community while enjoying wonderful food. October 2nd

The 3rd Annual Shop with a Cop Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show benefitting our local Washington County Shop with a Cop program. The event will take place on October 2nd on the Salem Square and Brick Street, located in Salem, IN. The show will be held from 1pm to 6pm. There will be goodie bags, dash plates, and t-shirts given out to the first 100 pre-registered/registered car show participants. There will be food vendors, music, activity booths, and much more! Register before September 24th and pay only $12, register the day of the show and pay $15. Registration is from 1pm to 2pm, car show judging is from 1pm to 4:30pm, and the awards ceremony will be from 5:15 to 6pm.

 

 

October 3rd

Sunday, October 3 at 3pm, the Down Syndrome Family Connection will host its 3rd annual Buddy Walk at Bryan Park in Bloomington. The fun begins for the whole family at 2pm with an outdoor carnival including bouncy houses, corn hole toss, and more. Registration opens at 2pm with the walk at 3pm. Following the walk, participants will receive a snack sack and drink and are invited to set up their chairs and blankets for an outdoor concert by Leonardo and his band (www.leonardomusic.com). Registration is free, but walkers must register by Sept. 8 to get a t-shirt. People and Animal Learning Services (PALS) invites you to the 10th annual PALS Fun Show on Saturday, October 9th at the PALS barn in Bloomington from 10:30am to 5:30pm. Please come support the PALS riders while they showcase the benefits of equine assisted activities and receive recognition for their achievements. The Fun Show is a free event complete with fabulous door prizes and delightful concessions for sale courtesy of the Trojan Horse restaurant. PALS serves individuals with disabilities and at-risk youth in your community. PALS is a United Way Member Agency and is the only NARHA Premier Accredited riding facility in the area.
